2007 Annual 'Fecal Feast' held in Ramos Generales, Ushuaia on 17th January

The SSbS

Formed in February 2005, The Snowy Sheathbill Society (SSbS), fosters understanding of and appreciates the tireless work done by the Snowy Sheathbill in keeping penguin rookeries clean and pristine and fit for all.

Snowy Sheathbills strut and flap whilst mutt-mutt-mutting about penguin rookeries, rummaging and scavenging titbits of taste tempting morsels from fecal deposits and mugging penguins for undigested krill they bring to their chicks.

They peer with inquisitiveness prior to laying siege to the guanodiorite throughout the rookery even at the discomposure of the unfamiliar visitor.

2009 Annual 'Fecal Feast' held in South Pacific on MV Spirit of Adventure 20th February

The Snowy Sheathbill

The Sheathbill when discovered was called Vaginalis
This was thought unsuitable, so
It was changed to Chionis

It has also been called Paddy
A Sore-eyed and Kelp Pigeon
But the object of our respect
Is the one that goes Mutt,Mutt,Mutt

The bird is clean and white
With unwebbed feet it wanders
Through penguin colonies like clockwork
Seeking food in the shite

They court each other fondly
Bowing, cawing and mutt-mutting
Claiming their territory to ensure
Their 'babies' are sure of feeding

Apart from sifting faeces
It steals penguin eggs
And is also in attendance
Like midwives to the seals

Now we the SSbS
Pay homage to our feathered friend
That recycles the waste of others
And pray that it will never end.
